The creator of Facebook’s “like” button, Aaron Sittig, has recently returned as a product architect last month, having left the position of design strategy lead in June 2010.

Sittig had led the visual design of the social network, creating icons for features like photos and wall posts. Industry rumors suggest Sittig also came up with the idea of tagging photos, which has helped Facebook overthrow Flickr for image sharing.

His return and switch in roles coincides with the recent update to Facebook Photos, making pictures even more prominent in its design, and the debut of the new high-resolution photo viewer. Sittig doesn’t specify in any of his public profiles which product he is now working on, but we would put our money on further development of images across the site.

Facebook has begun to roll out it’s new Photo Viewer. All users should see the new viewer over the course of the next few weeks. This is aimed at having the ability to browse more photos faster without losing your place in Facebook.

The development team has announced three big improvements to Photos: high resolution images so you can store larger photos, a better viewer for browsing, and a simpler uploader for when you have lots of images.

Lets take a closer look at some of the new features:

Higher Resolution

Support for print-quality, high-resolution photos has been added, and unlike on many other online services, you don’t need any kind of premium or paid account. The size of the photos will be increased from 720 pixels to 2048 pixels on the largest edge, for an 8 times increase overall.

A Better Photo Viewer

The new viewer makes it simpler and faster to navigate photos. You are now able to view photos and even whole albums without having to go to a new page. Now the photo opens in the center of your screen, and you close it when you’re done. There’s no need to go back and forth between pages or reload the page.

The light box makes viewing photos a richer experience. All of the code for the viewer was created from scratch, so paging through photos will be noticeably faster.

Easier Tagging and Uploading

The team also made it easier to tag photos. When people upload a set of photos, they are often of events like weddings and birthday parties where people are with the same group of friends and family. With the new uploader, you will be able to tag multiple photos in the same album all at once, as well as tag photos of the same person with a lot less effort.

Lastly, they’ve completely rebuilt the photo uploader to be more stable and reliable. It now uses the latest Flash technology, so that your experience getting photos onto Facebook is an easy one—especially when you have lots of them.
